Mustard seeds, though small, grow into large plants that can provide perching spots for birds. In Jesus' parable, the birds that perch on the branches do not carry any symbolic meaning. Instead, they are a natural aspect of Jesus' illustration of the remarkable expansion of the kingdom of God. Jesus clarifies that even though his kingdom would begin small, it would eventually encompass many people.
